Basic Information
- A normal adult dog heart rate is 60 to 160 beats per minutes
- Newborns 160 - 200 beats per minute; 220 beats per minute at approximately 2 weeks
of age.
- Respiratory Rate for an adult dog is 24 breaths per minute at rest, 10 - 30 breaths per
minute, newborn puppy is 15 - 35 breaths per minute up to 2 weeks of age.
- Temperatures for an adult dog is 100 - 102 degrees
- Newborn puppies 94-97 degrees at birth; 100 degrees at 4 weeks old.
- Average gestation period for pregnant mothers is 63 days. An ultrasound can be done
at 30 days of gestation to detect pregnancy or X-rays after day 45 of gestation.
- Dog should have an annual exam by a veterinarian for vaccines and a routine check-up.
- Protect your dog against Heart worm transmission by some sort of prevention
(Heartguard, Interceptor, Ivomec). All it takes is one infected mosquito to bite your
unprotected dog and it will transmit the disease to your dog.
- Use prevention for Heart worm and Lyme disease. Ask your veterinarian about
prevention types that will suit your dog.
